Greater Manchester and the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ has been hit harder by the coronavirus pandemic than the rest of the country, according to a new report.Authored by top academics from the region it says that existing inequalities left the north more vulnerable to the impact of COVID-19 - and both the economy and people’s health have suffered disproportionately.More people died of both COVID and non-COVID related causes in the Northern Powerhouse - defined as the North East, North West, Yorkshire and Humber and the Northern Midlands - than in other areas of England between March and July this year.Figures show that, compared to the national average, 57.7 extra people per 100,000 lost their lives during those months - and this remains.
