Newcastle scouting chief Steve Nickson is back at work having been furloughed last month. The move could signal that takeover talks are nearing completion following a period of uncertainty, with a £300m purchase lead by Saudi Arabia on the brink of completion.
The decision to place Nickson on the government scheme was taken by departing owner Mike Ashley, who could be entering his last few days as majority shareholder having joined the club back in 2007.
Despite the fresh update it remains unclear whether Newcastle have backed out of their decision to place all non-playing staff on furlough, which had been met with stern criticism.
