China have developed an AI robot that can take care of embryos in artificial wombs, reportedly with better results than human mothers. The efficiency of the new 'robo-nanny' is apparently far better than humans, with scientists recording results that would not be attainable for an embryo (the term for a foetus in the early stages of development) growing inside a woman.
Its main goal is to facilitate the raising and growing of animal embryos for scientific purposes, but a study published in the Journal of Biomedical Engineering has theorised the same facilitation could work for human embryos.Despite human experiments being forbidden, the eerie possibility of a totally artificial childbirth process has brought warnings from experts but clinical trials are a long way off.
Scientists from the Suzhou Institute of Biomedical Engineering and Technology have tested the operation of the robot on mice embryos.
The artificial womb consists of several containers with a nutrient mixture with embryos placed inside of it, with researchers previously having to manually track and document the condition of embryos.
