The National Society of Film Critics on Saturday named Nomadlandas its best picture of 2020. Nomadland's Chloe Zhao picked up a win for best director, while Frances McDormand won best actress for her performance in the drama film that explores the life of a nomad woman living in the American West.

The film took four awards overall, including best supporting actress (Youn Yuh-jung), original screenplay (Lee Isaac Chung) and the Ken Hanke Memorial Tarheel Award for actor Will Patton.“Nomadland” filmmaker Chloé Zhao continued her winning streaking, taking best director, in addition to adapted screenplay.

Clayton Davis The Alliance of Women Film Journalists has announced its 2020 AWFJ EDA winners, where the most-nominated film “Nomadland” walked away with six categories including best film, actress (Frances McDormand) and cinematography (Joshua James Richards). Filmmaker Chloé Zhao won three individual prizes for directing, adapted screenplay and editing.The AWFJ recognizes the year’s best regardless of gender in the conventional “best of” categories and this year, women dominated on both sides.

Until proven otherwise, it’s still strange to think that Chloé Zhao is going to be able to successfully transition from making incredibly intimate films like “Nomadland” and “The Rider” to superhero blockbusters like “Eternals.” But yet, come November, that’s exactly what’s going to happen, as Zhao is the filmmaker behind the aforementioned Marvel Studios film. Chloe Zhao led Eternals, which was supposed to come out last year, is gearing up for a release in the latter half of 2020. The highly-awaited movie marks the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) debut of Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden and Kit Harington amongst several others.
