The River Dart in Devon and my gaff-rigged sailing cutter was my choice for both beauty and solace. That I – who loathe beach holidays, to whom sunbathing is anathema and swimming best done in the calm of a pool – should now rate Lamu at the same level as the River Dart is a tribute to its seductive appeal.
I now go there two or three times a year – to a small encampment of mangrove and palm huts on the edge of the sea. A mile or more of deserted beach in front and nothing but sand dunes behind.
