More than 100,000 ignore coronavirus lockdown to attend religious festival

More than 100,000 worshippers have gathered for a religious ceremony in Bangladesh, ignoring the coronavirus lockdown and raising fears of a mass spread of cases.

Pictures show worshippers attending the funeral prayers of an Islamic religious preacher, Maulana Zubayer Amad Ansari, at a mass outdoor event in Brahmanbaria.

Officials in Bangladesh are looking into how the enormous crowd was able to attend the ceremony despite the lockdown. There are fears the event will rapidly spread the highly infectious Covid-19 virus around Bangladesh, one of the most densely populated countries on the planet.

So far, Bangladesh has reportedly a relatively low number of cases, with just 2,456 testing positive and 91 deaths in a country of some 161
