Michael van Gerwen has dismissed suggestions this year’s World Matchplay line-up is the strongest in the tournament’s history.The Blackpool event – widely regarded as the second most important tournament in the PDC behind the World Championship – has reached the halfway stage, with the final lot of second ties taking place tonight (Wednesday).
Van Gerwen booked his place in the last eight with an 11-5 victory over Joe Cullen. After the match, the Green Machine was asked if he is part of the best Matchplay line-up in history.
He gave an emphatic answer, insisting it is impossible to compare line-ups from different eras. “People saying it’s the best Matchplay field ever?
They are absolutely sick,” he said via Online Darts TV. “Arguably two, especially Phil [Taylor], one of the best players who ever lived, Raymond van Barneveld [graced the tournament in the past].
