Gerwyn Price repelled a valiant fightback from Jose de Sousa to clinch a place in the semi-finals of the World Matchplay – and replace Peter Wright at the top of the world rankings.In yet another thrilling clash at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens, Price looked to cruising into the last four when he led 13-8, but a rejuvenated De Sousa fought back by reeling off five legs in a row in the first-to-16 clash.Price regained his composure to move 15-13 ahead, only for De Sousa to pull another leg back, but the Iceman held his nerve to close the match out in the next leg. The other semi-final will pit Michael van Gerwen against Dimitri Van den Bergh. The latter knocked out defending champion Wright, who has now lost his place at the top of the world rankings.It is a place Price believes he deserves to be, despite a largely troubled 2022 so far which has seen him struggle for form and fitness, and fail to qualify for the Premier League play-offs.
