Martin Lewis's urgent warning as energy bills set to rocket this autumn

Martin Lewis has claimed many households are set to face an "energy bill disaster", but he's offered advice to help people prepare.It's said energy bills could reach a gobsmacking £3,300 on average this winter as the cost of living crisis continues to take its toll on families across the UK.The Mirror reports Lewis spoke about the issue in this week's MoneySavingExpert email.READ MORE: Thousands of families could get extra help due to £880m forgotten moneyIn the latest edition, Lewis said: "The coming winter will be bleak, the cost of living crisis is set to climax in catastrophe, unless there is further intervention. "Though the clock is ticking, by the time the new PM is in place, we'll know the new price cap, so rising direct debits will be panicking millions. "For now, let me explain what's coming, and try to mitigate it where I can."The Ofgem price cap puts a limit on how high variable-rate energy bills can reach for average use households who pay by direct debit.At the moment the price cap is set at £1,971, and is applied to 22 million households.To try and soften the blow Lewis has revealed what you need to know about the future price hikes.

The expert has claimed that if you already cough up £50 a month then you're looking at seeing this bill rise to £85 by October, as the price cap is going up.If you're currently paying £150 a month now, you're expected to see it rise to £250 a month from October.Meanwhile, if your bill currently comes in at £200 a month then you're looking at seeing it rise to £330 a month, and those who pay £300 on energy each month face having to cough up £495 when changes are made to the price cap.Lewis added: "This price cap is mostly predictable as it is dictated by regulator Ofgem's.
