Arsenal in the 2-0 win over Leicester, proving to club legend Martin Keown that he was wrong to criticise the playmaker after joining from Real Madrid. The Norwegian signed for the Gunners in January 2021 on an initial six-month loan deal before making a permanent move for around £35million in August. The 23-year-old was quietly impressive in his loan spell, scoring three goals and assisting two in his 16 appearances for the club.

But after joining permanently, Odegaard has proved to be a hit with Mikel Arteta and has commanded the role as Arsenal’s chief creator, consigning Emile Smith Rowe to the bench.

His recent run of form has made Keown’s previous comments all the more interesting, after the former defender suggested Odegaard should not be starting games as Arteta’s “project”. “Odegaard, I wouldn’t (start) because it’s almost another project which we haven’t got time for now,” he said, speaking on BT Sport in March 2021.“We have to win games of football and he’s not ready yet, he’s demonstrated that.”Later on in the season, Keown doubled down on his comments and even suggested Emile Smith Rowe would be a better choice in the central role.“Odegaard came in after Boxing Day,” Keown told talkSPORT. “Yes the results improved largely.

He played 16 times, nine starts, five [substitute appearances], one goal and two assists [sic].HAVE YOUR SAY: Where will Arsenal finish by the end of the Premier League this season?
