María Mendiola was a singer with Baccara, a Spanish disco duo known for their 1977 hit, “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie.”Mendiola was working as a flamenco dancer when she formed Baccara along with fellow dancer Mayte Mateos in 1977.
Their first single, the breathy “Yes Sir, I Can Boogie,” was a European hit, climbing to the tops of charts across the continent.
The record went gold and Baccara was noted by the Guinness Book of Records as the top-selling female musical duo to date. Baccara had further hits including “Sorry, I’m a Lady,” “Darling,” and “Parlez-Vous Francais?” The duo competed in the 1978 Eurovision Song Contest, representing Luxembourg.
