Police were called to Lostock railway station shortly before 4.40pm on Tuesday following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
Paramedics attended, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His death is not being treated as suspicious, officers say.
A file is being prepared for the coroner. Train services between Bolton, Wigan and Preston were disrupted for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.
