Leading housing official will take over from council regeneration chief retiring after 20 years

Manchester council has announced who will be replacing one of its most powerful officials who is standing down after 20 years.

Louise Wyman will become the town hall’s new strategic director, taking up the mantle from Eddie Smith, who has been a key figure behind the city’s regeneration.

Mr Smith, who was due to leave last month, has put off his retirement until the end of May while he supports the council during the coronavirus crisis.

During his time at the council he oversaw the transformation of east Manchester and the expansion of the city centre, while also building a relationship between the council and Manchester City.
