Labour's finance chief has declined to say the £20-a-week boost to Universal Credit should be made permanent. Anneliese Dodds said the temporary rise for 6million Brits must be "maintained during the pandemic".
But the Shadow Chancellor stopped short of saying it should be kept in perpetuity - arguing "radical reform" is needed instead.
That reform includes scrapping the benefit in its current form by getting rid of the five-week wait for first payment. Ms Dodds said Labour "want to make sure tat families have the support that they need for the future", but did not commit to a specific amount.
It comes despite campaigners and the Resolution Foundation think tank saying the £20 rise, which was added to standard allowances in April 2020,
