Brits who have been furloughed from their jobs are being encouraged to pick fruit instead. At Tuesday's daily coronavirus press briefing, Environment Secretary George Eustice said only a third of the usual migrant labourers have come to pick fresh produce in Britain this year due to the pandemic.

Workers from countries such as Romania and Bulgaria typically make their way to the UK in the spring and summer months to work on farms and orchards during their harvests.

Travel restrictions and other effects of the coronavirus outbreak have prevented people who would usually work as pickers from coming this year.
