Rangers captain James Tavernier insists Steven Gerrard's departure to Aston Villa is just a natural event in football. But he believes the club had the safety nets to absorb the shock exit and keep the players well away from the drama.

After a seven day wait the club installed Gio van Bronckhorst as Gerrard's replacement on Thursday evening. He won't be in the dugout however for Sunday's Premier Sports Cup clash against Hibs.

Instead it will be a caretaker coalition headed up by B team boss David McCallum and including first-team striker Jermain Defoe.

Tavernier will catch up with Van Bronckhorst on Monday after the Dutchman steered clear for this weekend, allowing Rangers to fully focus on the Hampden clash.
