One of the UK's creepiest abandoned buildings has been revealed as a huge former country mansion in Scotland which was turned into an asylum for the rich by a mysterious real-life Sherlock Holmes.
Mavisbank House near Loanhead in Midlothian, a 20-minute drive south of Edinburgh, was designed by renowned architect William Adam and completed in 1727.
The once-elegant country pile was commissioned by Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 2nd Baronet, and was once regarded as one of Scotland's most important country houses.
An early black and white photo of the interior shows a luxurious living room which Sir John - a politician in London - would entertain guests in.
