‘Insensitive to the point of insulting': Michael Sheen slams Charles III's visit to Wales

Good Omens actor Michael Sheen, 53, suggested King Charles III’s visit to Wales yesterday was “insulting” given the date that had been chosen.

He went on to explain the monarch decision to arrive on Owain Glyndŵr Day seemed “full of meaning”.The King, 73, arrived in Wales with his new title for the first time yesterday, receiving cheers from onlookers as well as protests from anti-monarchy groups outside Cardiff Castle.The Frost/Nixon took to Twitter to explain the issue he had with the King’s visit on that particular day in view of his 614,600 followers.In the video, the Welsh actor stood on a sandy beach as he told his fans it was “a beautiful day, as well as a very important day” on Friday.He went on to say that, while September 16 was an important day because it marked the first official visit to Wales by the new King, it was also Owain Glyndŵr Day.Owain Glyndŵr is a highly significant historical figure in Wales and is known throughout the country as the last self-proclaimed native Prince of Wales.Every year, people gather in the town square to mark Owain Glyndŵr Day on September 16, which is when the Welsh leader’s proclamation took place in 1400.This year part of the celebrations, which include a procession and a wreath laying ceremony by the statue of Owain Glyndŵr, were cancelled due to King Charles’ visit.The actor went on to explain that he, like many others, found it ironic that the Welsh holiday had been cancelled due to the visit of an English monarch.Michael then claimed that Owain Glyndŵr day and the King's visit are "obviously connected".“To choose September 16 to come to Wales having only a short time ago proclaimed that he had created his son William as the new Prince of Wales and to choose this day.
