Elizabeth II (Elizabeth Alexandra Mary; born 21 April 1926) is Queen of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. Elizabeth was born in London, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of York, later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, and she was educated privately at home. Her father ascended the throne on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII in 1936, from which time she was the heir presumptive. She began to undertake public duties during the Second World War, serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service. In 1947, she married Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, a former prince of Greece and Denmark, with whom she has four children: Charles, Prince of Wales; Anne, Princess Royal; Prince Andrew, Duke of York; and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex.

King Charles jets to Scotland to 'mourn mother in private' after very public funeral

King Charles III has flown back to Scotland to mourn his late mother privately following the very public state funeral for The Queen on Monday.

The Royal Family have begun their own period of mourning for another seven days since privately laying Queen Elizabeth II to rest in a chapel at Windsor Castle after the funeral at Westminster Abbey.

It concluded a "relentless" period of public duties and appearances for Charles, 73, and his new Queen consort Camilla since becoming King and he has now retreated from the limelight to grieve.

Charles will spend time at the Scottish estate of Balmoral, where his his beloved mother died with him by her side on Thursday 8 September.
