King Charles III has paid a moving tribute to his late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in a new official photograph released by Buckingham Palace. The new King, 73, was pictured with his red box for the first time as he carried out his official duties dealing with papers from government ministers in the UK and the realms, as well as Commonwealth representatives.

Charles can be seen looking at the red box containing the papers as he donned a blue pinstripe suit, but in the background a subtle nod to his late mother can be seen.

It's a black and white photograph of the late Queen and Duke of Edinburgh that was given to the Queen's father, King George VI, for Christmas in 1951 by the couple.

Charles automatically became King on 8 September after the Queen "passed away peacefully" aged 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
