When she sliced her foot on a piece of broken porcelain Rebecca Humphreys said the injury looked little more than a 'paper cut'.
The then 15-year-old had been decorating her bedroom and had jumped from a windowsill, not realising she had left an ornament on the floor, YorkshireLive reports.
She screamed out in pain and there was a bit of blood, but it wasn't thought to be a serious injury and life went on. But a fortnight later Rebecca's foot ballooned to the size of a rugby ball and doctors said it was so badly infected it would have to be amputated 'there and then', her mum Theresa recalls. It was later discovered that a shard of the ornament had penetrated her foot and had caused nerve damage that led to pain that would not go away.
