HS2 railway needed because humans can't teleport, top Tory tells MPs

The lack of teleporting means a controversial high-speed rail link must go ahead, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps insisted today.

The Cabinet Minister claimed he was not being “facetious” when he suggested the fact people cannot yet immediately move from one physical place to another without actually travelling meant the HS2 network needed to be built.

He told the Commons Transport Select Committee the line should be constructed “unless we think that people are going to be able to move around in some other form”.

He added: “I'm constantly amazed by science and maybe we will be able to – I don't mean this facetiously – but teleport ourselves or some other way of getting around; humans will always want to be in touch with humans.” His
