Now’s the time to introduce some summery shades, but dare you go full Portillo? Alex Bilmes urges caution I once interviewed the designer and artist Carlo Brandelli, in the days when he was making beautiful suits at the Savile Row tailor Kilgour.
Brandelli has perhaps thought longer and harder about the codes of traditional menswear than anyone I’ve met. (And I’ve met a few.) We got on to the subject of colour, a key topic for chaps at this time of year, when we mothball our drab cold-weather clothes in favour of items lighter and, perhaps, brighter? "The correct menswear palette," Brandelli told me, "is various shades of grey, dark navy, white, pink, sky blue, chocolate brown, camel, sand and black.
