A man has appeared in court accused of beating a homeless woman to death as she lay in a sleeping bag outside a church. Kieran Rifat, 22, is said to have brutally assaulted Kelly Stewart in the grounds of the Memorial Community Church, in Plaistow, east London, on March 26.

Emergency services attended and declared Kelly, 41, dead at the scene. Rifat, from Plaistow, was charged with her murder and appeared at the Old Bailey via video-link from HMP Belmarsh this morning.

Judge Nigel Lickley, QC, said: "This is an allegation concerning the murder of a lady who was homeless sleeping in the entrance to a church." He added that "she was possibly asleep in her sleeping bag" when it is alleged she was originally assaulted by the defendant.
