The government insists there is no threat to safety after half a million criminal records were lost in a computer-wiping error.
Hundreds of thousands of fingerprint, DNA and arrest history records were accidentally wiped from police databases because of "human error" and "defective code", according to the policing minister.
They were deleted accidentally from the Police National Computer 'in error' during routine maintenance earlier this week, a statement from Crime and Policing Minister Kit Malthouse said on Saturday.
Initially some 150,000 records were said to have been lost, but it emerged on Friday that the number could be far higher than first thought - at potentially more than 400,000.
