Ministers have been accused of “ignoring” a plea to hand extra cash to people who isolate under the new test and trace scheme.
Documents show SAGE, the government’s scientific advisory group, suggested an “offer of financial support” to hard-up people if the NHS tells them to stay at home for 14 days.
In a meeting on May 1, SAGE said the scheme needs a “high level of adherence” - and people might not comply “if they are impacted financially”.
But no new pot of cash for self-isolating people, beyond what already exists, has been announced since that meeting. Statutory Sick Pay was extended near the start of the outbreak to those self-isolating due to Covid-19 - and is now paid from day one.
