Floating Earth sculpture SINKS as extreme weather hits Salford Quays

A huge Floating Earth sculpture was SUNK as extreme wind and rain swept the region on Saturday - forcing organisers to cancel the Lightwaves Festival for the evening.

The giant globe is the centrepiece of the free Lightwaves event which is taking place across Salford Quays for the next ten days.

But on Saturday organisers had to cancel the event for the evening due to the "unexpected weather" - pulling the plug on the lights spectacle. READ MORE:Where to find Santa's Grottos around Manchester this Christmas During Saturday afternoon the globe sculpture, which is normally lit up and suspended by air creating the floating appearance, appeared to sink into the waters as the power was turned off by organisers.
