A female police officer was fatally stabbed by a knifeman who was then shot dead by at least one of her colleagues. The 49-year-old officer was stabbed in the throat when she was attacked inside a police station in Rambouillet, south-west of Paris, at about 2.30pm local time on Friday.

The knifeman burst into the station and shouted "Allahu Akbar", or "God is greatest", as he launched the deadly attack, said Francois Bersani, a police union official.

He is said to have been a Tunisian national. Officials have not yet said if the stabbing is being treated as a terrorist attack.

The administrative officer, who was attacked as she returned from her lunch break, and the knifeman were both treated at the scene for their injuries.
