Expert says 'no evidence' workplaces are safe amid Government back-to-work push

Safety experts have warned that there is "no evidence" that workplaces are safe - despite Government efforts to get millions of employees back to work.

Lawrence Waterman, chairman of the British Safety Council, which advises firms on health and safety, warned that inspections were too infrequent for ministers to offer guarantees.

The Government has been pushing for staff to go back to work to help support town centre economies - but many firms have put in place plans for working from home for months ahead.

But Mr Waterman told the BBC: "I think many of us don't understand why there's such firm advice with ministers stating that workplaces are now safe - there's no evidence for that. "Indeed, there is an argument which says that workplaces
