The former Bolton Wanderers midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch during an FA cup quarter-final in 2012. His heart stopped for 78 minutes but he recovered after medics administered 26 defibrillator shocks.
On Saturday, Danish footballer Christian Eriksen, 29, suffered an almost identical collapse during a Euros game against Finland.
Eriksen also suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch and was successfully resuscitated thanks to a defibrillator at the stadium.
