He was Foreign Secretary from 2016 to 2018 and Mayor of London from 2008 to 2016. Johnson was Member of Parliament for Henley from 2001 to 2008 and has been MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip since 2015. Ideologically, Johnson identifies as a one-nation conservative.

Boris Johnson has announced major restrictions in a huge shift in policy on the fight against the coronavirus pandemic tonight.

People are being told they must stay at home and only leave for "very limited purposes", including shopping for basic necessities and medical need.

He said that "in this moment of national emergency" people must "stay at home, protect our NHS and save lives". The Prime Minister said that a number of measures would also be introduced to enforce this, including a number of closures.

Those measures included: “Parks will remain open for exercise but gatherings will be dispersed," he added. People must only use public transport if it is for "essential" travel as a key worker.
