A new scheme to give thousands of restaurants, cafés and pubs a boost following the coronavirus lockdown comes into force today, offering members of the public 50% off meals out throughout August.

The state-subsidised Eat Out to Help Out scheme will give diners half-price meals from Monday, up to the value of £10 per person at more than 72,000 venues.

The discount applies to eat-in food and drink but does not apply to alcohol. The scheme was first unveiled by chancellor Rishi Sunak on July 9, alongside a six month VAT cut on days out, staycations and takeaways.

It came after government figures showed 80% of hospitality firms stopped trading in April, with 1.4million workers furloughed.
