Diners enjoying meals as part of the Government's Eat Out to Help Out scheme may have been eating ingredients that are up to 18 months old.
Restaurants and pubs being forced to close their doors during the coronavirus lockdown means the food industry has an excess of £20million worth of meat, fish and vegetables.
However supermarkets have been allowed to offload their leftover products after the Government tweaked changes to "best before" labels.
Experts are insisting the move is lawful and safe but are urging the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to publicise the move to make diners more aware.
