Dianne Durham was the first Black gymnast to win a U.S. national championship, in 1983.Durham trained with notable Romanian-American coaches Bela and Martha Karolyi, and she was a teammate of Mary Lou Retton.
The two trained and competed side by side, and Durham was on track to be an Olympic star. She won the junior national title in 1981, and she went on to further greatness in 1983, when she competed for the senior national title.
