Denise Van Outen has revealed a woman once hurled "vile and disgusting" abuse at her because she was playing a lesbian on stage.

The actress, 47, said the incident happened when she was in Rent in London in 2007. Opening up on Steph's Packed Lunch, Denise said it was so bad that the production team stopped the show while the woman was removed – but that the lady found her after she'd come off stage and carried on.

Denise said: "My character Maureen, she's a lesbian and she has a kiss with another woman."There was a homophobic woman in the audience who was heckling me throughout the whole show and when I had the kissing scene she said the most vile, disgusting things to me."The star said the entire cast "just stopped" and "went very quiet"."She was shouting, they stopped the show and they removed her from the theatre," she said."But she proceeded to follow me after the show when I left through the stage door, hurling abuse at me.

It was awful.""She thought I was a sloppy kisser apparently," Denise joked. The actress has starred in several stage shows and earlier this week shared how the cast of Broadway production Chicago were "frosty" with her because of her lads' mag past.Denise went across the pond to play Roxie Hart in the production but said at that time, if you Googled her, her time as a pin-up for men's magazines would come up.Luckily, the star got rave reviews on opening night and she said the cast were lovely to her after that."I had to prove myself, I really did have to prove myself," she said.Steph's Packed Lunch airs weekdays on Channel 4 at 12.30pm For more of the latest showbiz news from Daily Star, make sure you sign up to one of our newsletters here. .
