Coronavirus cases have jumped in four new hotspots as 60% of areas in England see infections rates fall. New figures out today show four UK hotspots - one in Tier 3 and three in Tier 2 - where it appears the toughened 3 Tiers lockdown restrictions have not so far prevented Covid-19 cases from surging.
In today's update of the rolling seven-day rate of new cases for every local authority area in England, figures are taken from the seven days to December 3.
The rate is expressed as the number of new cases per 100,000 people. In the Tier 2 county of Essex, both the boroughs of Basildon and Brentwood threaten to plunge the county into the toughest Tier 3 restrictions from Wednesday next week, when the first review of the tiers is to take place.
