Coronation Street legend Maggie Jones’ 88th birthday.Best known for her portrayal of Blanche Hunt on the famous cobbles, Maggie sadly died in 2009 after she was taken to hospital with a “serious illness” following an operation.She left an indelible mark on Corrie with her unique outlook on life, and her career was dotted with award wins, including two British Soap Awards for Best Comedy Performance in 2005 and again in 2008.To celebrate a Corrie icon, Daily Star has taken a look into her life and legacy - from her husband’s death to her own in December 2009.Maggie graduated from esteemed drama school RADA as a young actress, and went on to score various roles on the West End.Coronation Street was actually her first ever TV appearance - but not as Blanche.

She originally appeared in just one episode of the soap in 1961 as a policewoman. That wasn’t all. In 1967 she was invited back - this time to play the opposite part, as a shoplifter.
