NHS leaders warn that hospital waiting lists in the UK could have soared to nearly 10 million by Christmas owing to coronavirus disruption.

A huge increase in England is realistic because surgeries and diagnostic tests have been delayed by the pandemic, say hospital bosses.

The waiting list for hospital procedures was 4.4 million pre-coronavirus, a number that dropped slightly as doctors stopped referring as many patients or people sought to avoid hospitals over infection risks.

But, the NHS Confederation estimates that it is likely to reach 9.8 million by the end of the year as a result of staff shortages and hospitals having to cap the number of patients they can treat as social distancing needs limit bed capacity.
