The risk you place yourself in of catching coronavirus is "10 to 30 times higher" when you are just one metre away from someone else, the government's chief scientific advisor has said.
Sir Patrick Vallance says the two-metre rule is "based on a probability" and that standing one metre from someone gives the same risk in six seconds as a full minute at the recommended two metres.
His comments come just a day after a Cabinet minister claimed the two-metre rule could be "halved" in some workplaces to get the economy restarted.
