Notting Hill Carnival has been called off today for the first time in its 54-year history. Organisers said the event, which usually attracts more than two million people to west London over the August Bank Holiday weekend, wouldn't go ahead this year for safety reasons.

In a statement, Notting Hill Carnival Ltd said it had decided not to hold Europe's biggest street party "after lengthy consultations with our strategic partners and our advisory council".
