Coronavirus: George Alagiah withdraws from BBC news as cancer treatment puts him at risk

BBC newsreader George Alagiah has announced he's been forced to temporarily withdraw from the newsroom amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

The popular presenter told viewers he is 'absolutely gutted' by the decision. George, 64, was diagnosed with stage-four bowel cancer in April 2014 and revealed in December 2017 that the disease had returned.

He has endured over 40 rounds of chemotherapy since and continues to receive treatment. Breaking the news of his departure on Twitter, George told his followers: "Absolutely gutted.
