Weighing in on the matter, the platform's consumer psychologist, Shakaila Forbes-Bell notes that traumatic events can cause consumers to engage in nostalgia, as they seek to transport themselves to better times.

Scents have the ability to do the very thing, and it’s evident consumers have been drawn to perfume as a form of escapism.Citrus and vanilla notes were among the most popular scents, reports Clearpay, and it's not hard to see why.

Citrus is proven to boost the body's production of serotonin (the happy hormone), whilst vanilla calms and relaxes, reducing cortisol, the stress hormone.
