Serie A star was targeted while Newcastle’s prospective Saudi owners were pushing to complete a takeover of the club. The club would have received a major boost to their transfer budget if the takeover went through at St James’ Park.
However, the deal ultimately collapsed amid uncertainties from the Premier League over the potential roles of those involved in the acquisition.
The takeover bid was fronted by British businesswoman Amanda Staveley and with that having fell through, it leaves unpopular owner Mike Ashley still at the helm.
Immobile would have been one of many signings Newcastle fans will have been dreaming of while the takeover remained a possibility.
