China's race to breed "super pigs" heavier than polar bears is destined to fail with their current "poor" biosecurity, say observers.
To tackle the nation's pork-shortage problem, farmers are going to extreme lengths to produce huge disease-resistant hogs. A hog farmer in the region of Guangxi province, Zhao Hailin, tells Bloomberg, they want to raise them “as big as possible." High pork prices have pushed farmers to raise pigs as big as 175 kilograms to 200 kilograms.
A year and a half ago, China's hog herd was victim to swine fever which killed around 60% of the pig population, according to South China Morning Post.
