On April 26, 1986, the world was unaware that the worst nuclear disaster humanity had ever seen was unfolding in a corner of Russia.

It should have been a routine test at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, one commonly carried out across Russia so teams were prepared should electricity cut out.

There was a fear the power that maintained the cooling system in the reactor would cause it to overheat, which would have been catastrophic.

However, on that Saturday night there had been an unexpected 10 hour delay in carrying out the test, which meant those working were unprepared for what was about to happen.
