Boris Johnson has set up a hush-hush Whitehall task force to examine his Government’s virus mistakes. Critics blasted his move, fearing it means blunders won’t be publicly addressed without an inquiry into the 45,000-plus deaths so far.
One care boss stormed yesterday: “It is impossible to hush up such catastrophic failings.” The unit within the Department of Health is to examine lessons to be learned in the handling of the pandemic and recommend action.
Experts drafted on to the high level panel have been told not to disclose its work, or even their involvement. The Social Care Covid-19 Support Taskforce – known as the Lessons Learned Unit – was set up at the start of June after the scandal of rising deaths in care homes reached a peak.
