Five people were taken into custody in relation to the incident, although it later emerged that the local municipal police only had 35 officers on as staff at the time of the armed confrontation.

Following the deaths, the leader of a local, independent cartel group going by the alias Chaparro said in an audio clip that leaders of rival cartel La Familia Michoacana (LFM) broke their vow with him not to extort the people of Tuzantla.Chaparro claims that LFM leaders Johnny Hurtado Olascoaga (El Pez) and José Alfredo Hurtado Olascoaga (La Fresa) made that promise to him.
