Favre was appointed Dortmund boss in May 2018 and led the club to back-to-back second-place finishes in the Bundesliga. But the Westfalenstadion club have started the season poorly and find themselves fifth in the league with just six wins from their opening 11 games, leaving them five points adrift of league-leaders Bayern Munich.
Dortmund suffered a humiliating defeat in their most-recent outing, losing 5-1 at home to Stuttgart, who won promotion to the Bundesliga last season.
