Asteroid passing LIVE: Updates as an enormous space rock zips past Earth

While many Brits are enjoying their breakfasts this morning, a huge asteroid will actually be making a ‘close approach’ to our planet.

The asteroid, dubbed 52768 (1998 OR2), will make its closest approach to Earth at around 10:56 BST today, at which point it will be around 3.9 million miles from Earth.

While this might sound far, it’s actually classed as a ‘close approach’ by NASA. The enormous asteroid is estimated to measure between 1.8km - 4.1km in diameter.

At the higher end of that estimate, it suggests the asteroid could be up to five times as big as the world’s biggest building, the Burj Khalifa!
