Arsenal opted to sign Granit Xhaka after snubbing the chance to sign N'golo Kante due to expensive agent fees. The Gunners were targeting a move for then-Leicester star Kante in the summer of 2016 after the Frenchman's impressive campaign for the Premier League title-winning Foxes.
But they swiftly pulled out of a deal, allowing London rivals Chelsea to swoop in, after refusing to pay over the odds for the services of associated intermediaries.
Kante moved to Stamford Bridge for a fee of £32million, just weeks after Xhaka had completed his £35m switch to Arsenal. And former Arsenal transfer negotiator, Dick Law, revealed to The Athletic that a move for Kante was on the table until they pulled the plug.
